Clogs have a long history dating back to the Middle Ages, but over time they’ve been adopted and adapted by different cultures until they eventually became the functional-meets-fashionable items they’re known as today. In the late ’60s and ’70s, they were a major player in the boho style revival. Decades later, in the 1990s and early 2000s, brands like Chanel and Marc Jacobs brought back the trend with a more sophisticated touch.

This spring, the streets of Paris have been filled with fashion insiders opting for clogs in several variations, ranging from simple, traditional wooden platforms to more avant-garde interpretations that feature extravagant details and high-quality leather. But one thing they all have in common? A new sense of luxury that historically hasn’t been associated with the once-utilitarian shoe.

Although trends are fleeting, the return of clogs is one that will definitely carry over well into summer and autumn — and maybe even next spring. Their comfortable feel, relaxed yet sophisticated look, and ability to adapt to different styles make the trend much more viable than other passing fads. Not only a functional piece, they’re also a statement. We predict they’ll make their way into all of our closets before too long.
